Started in 1975, A.O. carries an excellent selection of equipment for camping, backpacking, climbing, canoeing, skiing, and travel. In the last thirty years A.O. has grown to include seven stores and an on line store, servicing Pelham/Alabaster south of Birmingham, Tuscaloosa in western Alabama, and Florence in northwest part of the state. We recently began servicing the southern part of the state, opening a store in Mobile, Alabama! We are thrilled and fortunate to be able to help more people across the state pursue their outdoor activities.

Because enjoying your time off is important, we make sure you are not left out in the cold when it comes to recommending the right equipment for your next adventure! In keeping with the philosophy on which A.O. was started, we provide functional gear from a well-trained staff that practice what they preach. There are many aspects of outdoor clothing, and equipment, that our staff continually educate themselves on, to ensure that our customers can receive the correct knowledge to best utilize their equipment.

Alabama Outdoors supports its community; outdoor and environmental groups such as Sierra Club, Friends of Locust Fork, Vulcan Trail Club, Cahaba River Society, Local Boy's and Girl's Scouts, Birmingham Canoe Club and many more. We are also sponsors for several events, including the Mulberry Fork Canoe and Kayak Races, Locust Fork River Festival, Sandrock Bouldering Competition, and the annual Alabama Outdoors Climbing Competition. In addition we provide our fifty person meeting room to non-profit groups.

We host or sponsor informational shows and programs, with nationally known speakers such as Neil Beidelman, Greg Child, Conrad Anker, and representatives of NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) to name a few. We are major contributors to funds like The Access Fund and the National River Alliance. We are also a proud to sponsor J.H. Ranch.
